Regulation watch

Follow 49 CFR Parts 229 and 230: eCFR changes, Federal Register rules, proposed rules and waiver petitions, and FRA safety advisories, with one email a day at most.

Regulation watch tells you when something changes for the parts of 49 CFR you work under. Every signed-in account has it, whether it belongs to a railroad's member or is a free crew account. Open Regulation watch in the sidebar, under Regulations.

Regulation watch: recent eCFR changes, rules, waiver petitions and safety advisories for the parts followed, with the choices on the right

Choosing what to follow

On the right, tick the parts you follow, Part 230 — Steam Locomotives and Part 229 — Railroad Locomotives (diesel/modern), and FRA safety advisories if you want them. Click Save. You need a confirmed email address to save, so the email has somewhere to go.

What it checks

Once a day, RailCompliant checks two official sources for each part anyone follows:

  • eCFR, the official current text of the regulations. When a part's text changes, the watch lists Part 230 changed with the date and the sections it touched, and links to the part on eCFR.
  • The Federal Register, where rules and notices are published:
    • rules and proposed rules for the part, with the date comments close on a proposed rule;
    • waiver petitions whose notice names the part, with the date comments close;
    • FRA safety advisories, if you asked for them.

The page lists the last 180 days for what you follow, newest first, each linked to its source.

The email

On a day something new appears, you get one email listing it, and never more than one a day. It goes only to a confirmed, active account. Each email has an Unsubscribe link that works without signing in; it turns the watch emails off and leaves your other settings alone. You can also untick everything on this page, or turn the email off under Regulation watch in your notification settings.

The watch is a summary. The regulation text on eCFR and the documents in the Federal Register have the final word, and your FRA inspector the final say on how they apply to you.
