My Career

Your own service record, hours, and certifications across every railroad you work with, and a printable Crew Service Record.

My Career is the one page in RailCompliant that belongs to you rather than to a railroad. It gathers what your railroads' records say about you — the runs you crewed, the hours you logged, the inspections you performed or certified, the designations you hold — and keeps what is yours alone: your certifications and their documents, service from before RailCompliant, and a short profile. Together they make a service record you can print.

Anyone with a RailCompliant login has it. Click My Career near the top of the sidebar.

How your railroads' records reach it

A railroad's records about you come to My Career when your login is connected to your entry on that railroad's crew roster. That happens when an administrator opens your roster entry under Crew and gives it an app account with your email address. If you work with several railroads, each one that has done this shows up.

If your login is not connected to a roster entry — normal for office and support staff who never turn a wrench — the Overview says so. Your certifications, past service, and profile work either way.

Railroad records are read for you alone, and only from the railroads you belong to. No railroad sees another railroad's records about you, and no railroad sees your certifications unless you share them.

The tabs

Overview — headline figures: hours this year and lifetime, runs crewed with train-miles and the number of locomotives, and current certifications with how many are expiring soon. Below them, a table of your railroads with your role, hours, runs, and volunteer value at each, your hours by year (volunteer, paid, and their total), and a Coming up list of certifications and designations close to expiry.

Service record — Runs crewed, one line per locomotive and role (engineer, fireman, conductor, and so on), with the number of runs and trips, train-miles, and the dates you first and last ran it. Beside it, Shop work by locomotive (hours and work orders on each engine) and Inspections (how many you performed and certified on each, and the latest).

Hours — every hour your railroads logged for you, with the date, the work order, inspection, or run it came from, the locomotive, whether it was volunteer or paid, and the value of volunteer time at the rate on the entry.

Certifications — your own certifications, described below, and the designations your railroads have recorded for you.

Past service — service before RailCompliant, or at railroads that are not on it. Add the Railroad, your Role, From and To dates (leave To blank if it is ongoing), approximate Hours, the Locomotives you worked, and Notes. Past service is always labelled self-reported and never mixed into the verified totals.

Profile — a Headline (how you would describe your work), where you are based, and a few lines About you. Your name and email come from your login. The profile heads your printed service record.

Everything drawn from a railroad's records is marked verified; everything you type yourself is marked self-reported, so anyone reading your record can tell them apart.

Your certifications

Open Add a certification on the Certifications tab and fill in:

  • Type — CPR / first aid; boiler inspection or steam course; welding (AWS or similar); medical, hearing, or vision; Part 240 locomotive engineer certificate; Part 242 conductor certificate; railroad designation or qualification; another training course; or other.
  • Title as it reads on the card, Issued by, and the Number.
  • Issued and Expires dates — leave Expires blank if it does not expire.
  • Documents — photos or PDFs of the card or certificate: up to five at a time, 25 MB each and 40 MB in one upload.
  • Notes.

Each certification shows whether it is current, how many days it has left, or that it has expired. Use Edit to change it or add documents, and Delete certification to remove it with its documents. Your documents are stored privately for you, with 250 MB of space in all; the tab shows how much you have used.

Reminders before a certification expires

RailCompliant reminds you 60, 30, and 7 days before a certification's expiry date, and on the day it lapses — in the app, and by email unless you turn that off under My certifications expiring in your notification settings. Renew a certification by editing its dates; reminders start fresh for the new expiry.

Sharing a certification with a railroad

Under each certification, Shared with lists the railroads you belong to. Click a railroad to share that certification with it, and click it again to stop. A railroad sees a certification, and its documents, only while you share it — on your roster page, where its administrators can use it as evidence when they record a designation.

Designations from your railroads

Below your own certifications, Designations from your railroads lists what each railroad has designated you for — daily inspector, brake inspector, and so on — with the dates and status. These are the railroad's records, shown to you read-only: under 49 CFR 229.21 each railroad designates who is qualified for its own work, so a designation at one railroad does not carry over to another.

Printing your service record

Click Print service record for the Crew Service Record, a clean printable sheet headed with your name, profile, the date it was prepared, and your railroads. Tick the sections to include — Summary, Service record, Hours by year, Certifications, and Past service — click Update, then Print / Save as PDF. Verified and self-reported entries are marked on the sheet as they are on screen.

Hours (CSV) downloads every hour your railroads logged for you as a spreadsheet, with the date, railroad, kind, hours, volunteer value, the work, and the locomotive.
